In 2018, the United States Mint launched a multi-year series that started in 2018 to honour innovation and innovators by issuing 1-dollar coins for each of the 50 States, the District of Columbia, and the five U.S. territories. The Mint works with the office of the Governor, or other Chief Executive for each State, territory, or city, along with subject matter experts, to determine design concepts emblematic of innovation that is significant and meaningful to its jurisdiction and/or its role in the Nation. Once the Secretary of the Treasury approves the design concepts, the designs are developed and reviewed. The Secretary of the Treasury selects the final design for each coin. The 2023 designs honour innovations from Ohio, Louisiana, Indiana, and Mississippi.

Ohio – Underground Highway

The Ohio coin depicts two strong hands grasped together, the upper arm pulling the lower arm upward, representing the support and strength required by both parties on the Underground Railroad. A chain fastened to a rustic shackle around the lower arm’s wrist snaps and fragments, alluding to the hope of freedom.

Louisiana: The Higgins Boat

The Louisiana coin depicts a Higgins Boat (a.k.a. a landing craft) as it would have been deployed during the Second World War, with its innovative landing ramp open against a beach. 

Indiana: Gas Automobile

The Indiana coin features a series of vehicles that showcase Indiana innovations from yesterday and today. From top to bottom, the design includes an early style gas automobile, a representation of classic car production, and a recent model of an Indy style race car.

Mississippi: FIRST HUMAN LUNG TRANSPLANT

The Mississippi coin features a pair of human lungs in the background, while a surgical assistant passes forceps to the surgeon during the first lung transplant surgery.

Les dollars états-uniens 2023 du programme Innovations

En 2018, la United States Mint [Monnaie des États-Unis] a lancé une série pluriannuelle visant à honorer l’innovation et les innovateurs en émettant des monnaies de 1 dollar pour chacun des 50 États, pour le district de Columbia et pour les cinq territoires américains. La Monnaie travaille avec le bureau du gouverneur, ou autre chef de l’exécutif de chaque État, territoire ou ville, ainsi qu’avec des experts en la matière, pour déterminer les concepts de design emblématiques de l’innovation qui est importante et significative pour sa juridiction et/ou son rôle dans la Nation. Une fois que le secrétaire au Trésor a approuvé les concepts, ceux-ci sont développés et examinés. Le secrétaire au Trésor sélectionne le dessin final pour chaque pièce. Les dessins de 2023 rendent hommage aux innovations de l’Ohio, de la Louisiane, de l’Indiana et du Mississippi.

ohio : le chemin de fer clandestin

La pièce de l’Ohio représente deux mains robustes jointes, le bras supérieur tirant le bras inférieur vers le haut, représentant le soutien et la force nécessaires aux deux parties sur le chemin de fer clandestin. Une chaîne attachée à une manille rustique autour du poignet du bras inférieur se casse et se fragmente, faisant allusion à l’espoir de liberté.

LOUISIANE : LE BATEAU HIGGINS

La pièce de Louisiane représente un bateau Higgins (aussi appelé péniche de débarquement) tel qu’il aurait été déployé pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, avec sa rampe de débarquement innovante ouverte contre une plage. 

INDIANA : L’AUTOMOBILE À ESSENCE

La pièce de l’Indiana présente une série de véhicules qui illustrent les innovations de l’Indiana d’hier et d’aujourd’hui. De haut en bas, le dessin comprend une automobile à essence de style ancien, une représentation de la production de voitures classiques et un modèle récent de voiture de course de style Indy.

MISSISSIPPI : PREMIÈRE TRANSPLANTATION PULMONAIRE HUMAINE

La pièce du Mississippi représente une paire de poumons humains en arrière-plan, tandis qu’un assistant chirurgical passe des pinces au chirurgien lors de la première opération de transplantation pulmonaire.
